Finding the Right Employer

A key feature of the industry is that plumbing contractors are predominantly small businesses with over 90% of businesses employing between 1 and 50 employees. Also Group Training Companies have a role in ensuring a steady flow of new entrants into the Plumbing Industry.

The challenge for the applicant in finding the right employer is to "self assess their future goals".

A small employer employing between 1-5 employees will generally provide a greater diversity of work across domestic maintenance and some new work.

A contractor employing 6-25 employees may operate or target a particular area such as New work, Maintenance or Service work in areas such as Sanitary, Gas, Roofing or Mechanical Services/Air conditioning in high-rise, shopping centres etc.

A Major Contractor who employs more than 25 will generally undertake work to Hydraulics, Sanitary, Mechanical Services or Roofing. Their work will be in installing plumbing services in high rise, shopping centres, hospitals, factories and other major buildings.

A Group Training Scheme will provide you with employment access to each contracting group.

Note: Wages and conditions will differ between employers.
