Entry into the Industry

Employment in the Industry is generally through Apprenticeship.

A Plumbing Apprenticeship usually takes 4 years of full time work and study.

There are approximately 80,000 registered or licensed persons in Australia of which the majority has principle registration for Water, Drainage, Sanitary and Gasfitting.

A special feature of the plumbing workforce is the manner in which the industry regulates and supervises its training, examinations and registration of plumbers to carry out a wide range of functions in identifiable trades sectors of the industry.

New Apprentices are expected to have enthusiasm, commitment, problem solving and comprehension skills and the ability to think for themselves;

• A willingness to work and learn new skills
• Enjoy working in an indoor/outdoor environment
• Be prepared to travel to jobs

- Successfully completed a minimum of year 10, with good results in Mathematics, Science, English and Environmental studies

- At least 15 years of age, but preferably 16, 17 or 18 plus

- Have made enquiries regarding a career or have had exposure to the Plumbing Industry such as discussions with careers teachers, parents, plumbing tradespersons, New Apprenticeship Centre, completed pre- apprenticeship course or work experience.

If the answers to the above are yes then the applicant has reached the first stage and ready to apply for a Plumbing Apprenticeship in the Industry.
