What are employers looking for?
The most important things in an employer's mind when looking at you as a potential employee are:
• Can you do the job? • Will you fit into their organisation? • Will you do the job well - in other words, are you motivated and enthusiastic?
If
possible, it may be a good idea to visit a potential workplace before
the interview and check out the work environment. You might also like
to research the company or talk to plumbers or plumbing apprentices.
Step 1
If still at school talk to your careers teacher for assistance with preparing your resume ensuring you include:
• Work experience, even if not related to Plumbing • References, personal or work related • School results • Sporting or hobby interests
Make your application stand out (write a cover letter)
• The objective is to "persuade the employer you have something to offer". • Find out as much as you can about the organisation and the job • Write a letter of application • Get a job description or job profile • Relate your skills and abilities to the position
