Matching a potential apprentice to your business is more important than the purchase of major capital equipment such as truck, car, computer etc. As with the purchase of any equipment, you need to consider whether the potential apprentice will suit your needs as a business.
Before commencing the interview, you will need to set aside quiet time (30-45 mins) without interruptions.
Inform the applicant on conditions of employment, eg. award or employment agreement, wages, leave and other entitlements (contact your Employer Association for details)
Things to consider:
Prepare interview questions, handouts and information well in advance.
Questions you may consider for interview.
1. Can you tell me about your schooling, level, achievements, likes and dislikes?
2. What has prompted you to apply for this apprenticeship?
3. What part-time jobs have you been employed in?
4. Do you have any family members or friends employed in the Trades related work?
5. What type of transport will you be using to get to the job?
6. When can you start?
