The industry as a whole encourages the development of self-employed businessmen and women who trade in many aspects of plumbing products and services.

"However, the modern plumber has to be in tune with the many water supply and sanitary products and fixtures which form part of a major plumbing industry focused on a society accustomed to modern Western style plumbing appliances".

Note: Employment into the industry is through Apprenticeship.

"It is crucial that students receive the appropriate advice and support whilst still at school to enable them to make informed choices and therefore increase their opportunities in being successful within the Plumbing Industry".

For students to have a better chance of gaining an Apprenticeship in the Plumbing Industry, they need to be made aware of the industries' expectations and to also:

• undertake work experience
• select appropriate subjects, eg.English, Maths,
• participate in VET programs/ pre apprenticeship course
• obtain information on aptitude testing
• receive assistance with the preparation of resumes and interview skills

What are employers looking for?
Getting Started (sample for students)

The most important things in an employer's mind when looking at you as a potential employee are:

• Can you do the job?
• Will you fit into their organisation?
• Will you do the job well - in other words, are you motivated and enthusiastic?

If possible, it may be a good idea to visit a potential workplace before the interview and check out the work environment. You might also like to research the company or talk to plumbers or plumbing apprentices.

Step 1

If still at school talk to your careers teacher for assistance with preparing your resume ensuring you include:

• Work experience, even if not related to Plumbing
• References,
personal or work related
• School results
• Sporting or hobby interests

Make your application stand out (write a cover letter)

• The objective is to "persuade the employer you have something to offer".
• Find out as much as you can about the organisation and the job
• Write a letter of application
• Get a job description or job profile
• Relate your skills and abilities to the position

Tell the employer why you are interested in the job and what you can offer them.

Point out your qualifications, abilities and experience.
