Job Applications

What are employers looking for?
The most important things in an employer's mind when looking at a potential employee are:

• Can you do the job?
• Will you fit into their organisation?
• Will you do the job well - in other words, are you motivated and enthusiastic?

If possible, it may be a good idea to visit a potential workplace before the interview and check out the work environment. The applicant might also like to research the company or talk to plumbers or plumbing apprentices.

Step 1

If still at school the student should talk to the careers teacher for assistance with preparing the resume ensuring that it includes:

• Work experience, even if not related to Plumbing
• References,
personal or work related
• School results
• Sporting or hobby interests

Make the application stand out (write a cover letter)

• The objective is to "persuade the employer that the applicant has something to offer".
• The applicant should find out as much as possible about the organisation and the job
• Get a job description or job profile
• Relate the applicant's skills and abilities to the position

The applicant should tell the employer why he or she is interested in the job and what they can offer.
Point out qualifications, abilities and experience.

Step 2

The applicant should consider undertaking a Plumbing pre-apprenticeship course at a TAFE college which has a high success rate in students obtaining an apprenticeship.

Step 3

Finding an employer requires a commitment on the part of the applicant.

In a recent survey the majority of plumbing employers indicated that word of mouth or the applicant approaching them personally was a very successful method in the employment of apprentices.

Note: Nothing beats approaching potential employers direct. The applicant can talk to an employer direct and ask questions. This method will teach the applicant about people and things like expectation and priorities.
